Dr. James Chan was the first person commissioned by the American Management Association (AMA) in 1996 to create and lead a three-day course titled "Business Skills for the China Market."

The seminar was designed for executives, managers and technical professionals of Fortune 1000 companies. Dr. Chan was the course leader at AMA facilities in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego and the AMA training center in Brussels, Belgium throughout 1997 and 1998.

Since 1998, Dr. Chan has served as an internal consultant on Chinese business practices and to coach and facilitate intra-company training and professional development. U.S. executives, division managers, and technical and engineering professionals in publicly-traded and privately-held companies benefit from coaching programs with Dr. James Chan. These coaching and mentoring sessions range from executive briefings to workshops covering the following topics.

Executive Coaching: Common Themes

  1. Marketing American-made products and services to China.
  2. Chinese negotiation style and common pitfalls of U.S. businesspeople.
  3. Building relationships with the Chinese: the meaning and practice of "guanxi."
  4. Chinese business practices and the Chinese mindset.
  5. Protecting your intellectual property rights.
  6. The meaning of a Chinese contract.
  7. Cultural awareness: things Americans do that irritate the Chinese.
